Where?
Texoma! You know, the border of Texas and Oklahoma. Just like Texarkanas, the border of Texas and Arkansas. Creative or lazy? You decide.
Regardless of the name of the region it does possess a GIANT lake (12th largest in the US) that we took advantage of last weekend. The north side of the lake is Oklahoma (seen here),
and the south side is TX. We learned about it at the Outdoor Recreation building on base. Turns out Sheppard AFB has an "annex" on this lake. You can rent cabins, camper sites, or campgrounds for your tents. They have a marina, a bar and grill, hiking and biking trails, etc.
We arrived and checked into our cabin on Friday evening. I didn't take pictures of the cabin because we didn't spend much time in it, but trust me when I say we had a good laugh at the fact that it was bigger than our new digs on base I last posted about. We took a bike ride around the area to check things out, then went to the marina to see about renting a boat. Just our luck! There was one pontoon boat left and we snagged it! We tootled around the lake that night to get our bearings, and then headed in to grill some dinner.
Saturday we enjoyed the beautiful weather as Scott fished and I laid on the boat's sun pad. There was a nice breeze that kept us cool, but at some point I unknowingly sweated off my sunscreen and burned my back. Yowza! But this girl had better luck...
And Scott had better luck with fishing than I did with sunbathing...
We're told it's an Alligator Gar fish. Ugly! And it had sharp teeth too. We were excited that it was around a foot long, but then I googled it and laughed away the short-lived pride! Turns out it was a baby and will one day grow up to be this...
This sucker is over 8 ft. long and weighs 230 lbs! Krikey! Read about it here:
All said and done we thoroughly enjoyed the getaway. Nothing like relaxing on the water!
That fish is CREEPY!!!!!!!!!!!!
